Tarta not torta

Today marks the first day of my Birthday Month! It is also my 100th post on this blog (which I feel deserves some sort of aniversary like celebration)... and so, here for our enjoyment are two lovely cakes!
Cake Numero Uno: Sarah Palin as a cupcake. What can I say? Gracias Google.

Cake Numero dos: You beauty.

In Spanish to 'Darle una tarta a alguien' is to give somebody a cake. 'Darle a alguien una torta', is to smack somebody in the face, quite a different gift.

Ultima semana de Julio

Today we visited a Medieval town called Santillana del Mar. Its streets were pebbled and its walls dressed in tacky tourist t-shirts. Just before this photo was taken Alicia screamed 'lets do a Marina'. Which basically meant ' be small and grin!'. Doing a Marina, can also mean 'Scribble on nearby furniture' ,or, 'Sing the word Chorizo to the tune of Bad Romance'.
My favourite Marina quote of the week:
Yo: Dormiste bien Marina?
Marina: Como un enano- TUMBAO!
Me: Did you sleep well Marina?
Marina: Like a dwarf- CONKED!
Flowers are always photogenic.
A nice casa.

On friday evening I went on an unsuccessful search for a Jazz festival. Although my evening lacked beep bop, I did however, find some other curious and and beautiful things...

1# A statue of a poet reading a catalogue about home appliances.
2# Some clocks that took my fancy.

3# Ambling away from the Sardinero I heard the booming vocals of David Bisbal. I'm not sure if your familiar with his voice, but let me tell you, its EPIC. Following the words, 'Mucha gente' 'En el Pueblo' (or something like that), I found myself turning onto a narrow street and face to face with a boat full of people with whipped cream faces. They saw me, saw my camara, and then pursued to throw boiled sweets at my head.
I snapped and ran.
Lesson learnt: Don't listen to David Bisbal.

Malinao is the nearest town to where I live. It is full of highrise flats and lies at the edge of river which is so toxic I wouldn't be suprised if it were home to mutant rats and toads.
That said, I think its a really cool place, and its always full of kids dancing in the squares or teens drinking don simon in la calle. This is my favourite block of flats in Maliano, in the bottom right there is a typical Spanish flag with a toro. El Nice-o.

If you're feeling brave...

Edible Art: Share the Sweet

I love it when I see something dessert related and within a few seconds I find myself smiling with delight. That's what happened to me recently when I first saw these wonderful candy designs by Norwegian designer Maria Tovslid. Titled Share the Sweet, Tovslid's series was created to change the way we read, interact with, and consume candy. The three pieces, the chocolate, the lollipop, and the licorice, are molded in such a way to draw attention to the experience of sharing. It's candy that not only makes sharing easy, but encourages it. What's better than that?? You can check out more of Maria Tovslid's work on her Web site, right here.

And I feel the calling of ADVENTURE.

It seemed a sad time to leave Cantabria. The Santander festival was begining and little by little, the bay was begining to fill with small tents selling tapas, live grafitti acts, musicians and blue painted people. Nonetheless, I was excited to visit Salamanca. A city famous for its jamon, and beautiful architecture which is covered with beautiful lettering, some of which was previously painted in Bulls Blood. Hardcore!
More than anything, I was thrilled to be reunited with my musical amiga Laura Franek. Whilst rowing, she serenaded us with the soundtrack of Pocahontas and the first semester spanish love song (see below- the genius that is all the sleezy-cheezy lines you can learn on an intensive language course).
In the Plaza Mayor (which is my favourite one to date), I spied a lady looking pensive on her balcony.
At the entrance to the Cathedral I spied an astronuaght!
Salamanca receives 5 estrellas. It is an incredible city with amazing food, a lovely ambient and gente cojonuda.

Breakfast #32: Bacon Pancakes

title
Have you let bacon pancakes into your life yet? They are great friends I promise. They are easy to throw together (especially if you get your pancake batter sorted the night before) and can make even the most bleary-eyed mornings seem promising. They can even make a Monday morning seem like a Friday morning – and that’s saying a lot especially if you, like me, is a person for whom Mondays loom ominous at every Sunday’s end!

I know I am certainly not alone in my dread of Mondays. It’s a day many are not particularly fond of. For me in particular, Mondays are when most all of my work reports are due. Pair that with the mountain of mails that always seem to sneakily pile up during the weekend, and you’ve set yourself up for a hectic chase every beginning of the week. This aside from the fact that Mondays, in and of themselves, are already frenetic and moody-bluesy and goodbye-lovely-weekend-feeling.

I have tried working later Fridays, as well as throughout the weekend, but nothing can quite prepare oneself for the advent of a mad and merciless Monday.

Except maybe for these.

Delicious, gut-sticking, unrepentantly indulgent, slightly tacky. Bacon Pancakes…I submit myself to you.

I stumbled onto these dubious beauties here – resplendent in their defiant retro-ness. I had to have them. Not just for Mondays either – they likewise work a treat when you are down with one of those untraceable, painful-throat, scratchy-cough, runny nosed, mystery illnesses. And no, I don’t listen to those types that claim that sweet and sticky things will only make your throat worse. Depressing food will make you worse I say!

I'm not ashamed to adsmit I've used boxed pancake mix here (I’m all for making things from scratch but Mondays, and illness, bring out the deviant in me), but if you have an easy, Monday-morning-friendly pancake recipe then by all means use that! Just fry some bacon in a hot skillet, leaving space in between each strip for the pancake batter. Then pour your batter of choice directly on the sizzling bacon when it is cooked but not too crisp. Once the underside is done, and lots of little bubbles appear on the surface, flip your bacon pancake and cook it the rest of the way through. I wish mine had turned out as perfectly shaped as those in this photo but it appears I am sadly lacking in 1950’s pizzazz. Or maybe I’m just messy.

Anyway…

The next time you are battling a miserable Monday, or an even more miserable flu-like bug, throw together some pancake batter, set the bacon on the griddle, and prepare for redemption.

***Another lovely thing to cheer me up when I’m ill…this little blog was mentioned in the online version of the Sunday Inquirer Magazine! Thanks to Travels with a Gourmet for the mention! :)

Bittersweet

I love people who think creatively with food, who create new dishes and flavor combinations, who don't take food or themselves too seriously and therefore end up making food that stirs your emotions, whether they are making you smile or laugh . . . or gag. Rick at Bittersweet is just such a person. He has only been blogging for eight months, but he has already posted recipes for Cough Syrup Cupcakes, Candyland cake, Twinkie Milkshake, Tie Dye Tiramisu, Chocolate Mountain, Red Velvet Pancakes, and Apple Pie French Toast, just to name a few. I don't think there's ever been a cake, a pie, or a cookie on Rick's site that I didn't like. Okay, I'll admit that sometimes his ingredients scare me, but I admire his originality and the sense of fun he brings to each and every recipe! Always unique and unexpected, Bittersweet is definitely one of my favorite places to visit.
